On Picking Battles…

Go big or go home.

Swing for the fences.

Do or die.

Go for broke.

Our society places a great deal of emphasis on impressive results, audacious performances, and big victories. These outcomes garner attention, result in accolades, and make headlines and highlight reels.

But, even though dramatic results are frequently cause for celebration, when the going gets tough, it is often the small wins that sustain our day to day efforts. Seeking out, and celebrating, small successes has nothing to do with lowering expectations. It simply requires that one view achievement as a series of small victories leading to the desired outcome. When our jobs, our school, or our lives become stressful and discouraging, a small win, at the right time, can mean the difference between resignation and perseverance.

Be vigilant in your search for the modest victory.

Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. – Jonathan Kozol
